August 17th 1940

Friday August 16th 1940

This is the diary which was found at the back of a drawer in our dad's old home. He was called Leslie Milford Smith, born on 17th September 1918 and died on 28th March 2010. He lived all his life in Rawtenstall, Rossendale, Lancashire, where he met and married our mum, Ethel  Westwell, on March 31st 1942.  Then we two children were born, myself and my sister Shirley. When the diary was found he said he did not want it to be read to him, but I could do with it as I wished. It is such  an important piece of our family history, and indeed the eyewitness account he writes of his experience of being in London during the Blitz of 1940-41, working at the time, for the Army Pay Corps. A young man in his early twenties emerges from its pages. So, a page at a time his story will appear here. I hope you read on........................ click on  the picture for the larger version.
